Therapeutic communication is an essential part of building the patient-carer relationship in order to improve the patient’s understanding of the events inherent to their management and care. It helps establish confidence and dispel any doubts.
It is sometime confused with conversational hypnosis.
It draws on:
- The analysis and use of several types of language: verbal, non-verbal and paraverbal
- Active listening and empathy
- Reformulation
- The ability to replace negative words with positive words and/or expressions
Training does exist but this is often offered by private organisations.
